centigram |
A centigram is a unit of weight in a system of measurement called the "metric system." A centigram is equal to 1/100 of a gram in that system. That means it takes 100 centigrams to equal one gram. If something weighs one gram, it weighs about as much as a raisin. So if something weighs 1/100 of a gram, it weighs very, very little. One centigram of weight is a very tiny amount. |
centimeter |
A centimeter is a certain length. We might say that a short pencil is ten centimeters long, for example. When we measure something in centimeters, we are using a system of measuring called the metric system. When we use the metric system, we don't use measuring words like inch and foot. We use words like centimeter and meter. A centimeter is pretty short. A centimeter is about as long as a ladybug or maybe the tip of your little finger. A short way to write centimeter is "cm." |

the basic unit of weight in the metric system, equal to one thousandth of a kilogram or 0.0353 ounce. (abbreviated: g) |
kilogram |
A kilogram is a unit of weight equal to one thousand grams. It is a unit of weight in the metric system. A gram is a small amount of weight. It's around the weight of raisin or the cap of a pen. One thousand grams--a kilogram--equals a bit more than two pounds. A short way to write kilogram is "kg." |
kilometer |
A kilometer is a unit of length in a system of measuring things that is called the "metric system." A kilometer is equal to one thousand "meters." A meter is the basic unit of length in the metric system. It is equal to a little more than three feet, about the length of some baseball bats. That means that one kilometer is equal in length to about one thousand baseball bats! One kilometer is shorter than a mile, though. It is only equal to about six tenths of a mile. A short way to write "kilometer" is "km." |

the basic unit of capacity of the metric system, equal to 1.056 liquid quarts or 0.908 dry quarts. (abbreviated: l) |

metric1 |
When a measurement is metric, it has to do with the metric system of measurement. The metric system measures things in units like meters, liters, and grams. Most countries use the metric system, but the United States is one of the few countries that does not. The United States measures things in units like feet, cups, and ounces. |
metric system |
The metric system is a way to measure things. It's a way to measure how long something is, for example, or how heavy or how tall. It's also a way to measure how much of something there is--like how much water there is in a bottle or how much peanut butter there is in a jar. In America, people use words like inches, feet, miles, pounds, and ounces when they measure things, but the metric system uses different words, and they don't mean the same things. The metric system uses words like meter, gram, and liter for measuring things. The metric system is used by people of most countries of the world to measure things around them. And the metric system is used by scientists of all countries in their work. |
