centimeter |
a unit of length equal to one hundredth of a meter or 0.3937 inch. (abbreviated: cm) |
inch |
When we talk about how many inches something is, we are talking about how long it is. If we measured a grown-up's nose, it might be about two inches long. Most soda cans are about five inches high. A short way to write inch or inches is "in." [1/2 definitions] |
meter1 |
A meter is a certain length. You might say that a baseball bat is one meter long, for example. When we measure something in meters, we are using a system of measuring called the metric system. When we use the metric system, we don't use measuring words like foot and inch. We use words like meter and centimeter. A meter is a little longer than three feet, and three feet is equal to 36 inches, about the length of some baseball bats. A short way to write meter is "m." |
millimeter |
a unit of length equal to one thousandth of a meter or 0.03937 inch. (abbreviated: mm) |
scale3 |
Things like maps and models are made according to something called "scale." Models and maps are not the same size as things in real life, so scale is a way to represent the size of things correctly but with everything made much smaller (or sometimes much bigger). Let's say that, on your map, one inch represents 100 miles. This means that one inch for every 100 miles is the scale that your map uses to show distance and size. [1/4 definitions] |
unit |
A unit is a particular amount that is used to measure things. The inch and the foot are units for measuring how long something is. The pound and the ounce are units for measuring how much something weighs. The degree is a unit for measuring temperature. [1/3 definitions] |
