compound sentence a sentence made of two or more independent clauses. The sentences are joined by a conjunction or semicolon. "The sky darkened, and the wind howled" is a compound sentence.
conjunction A conjunction is a certain kind of word. A conjunction is a word that connects other words or parts of sentences together. If we say "cars and trucks," the conjunction "and" connects "cars" with "trucks." "And" is one of the most common conjunctions, but there are many others also. Words like "but," "so," "because," and "while" are some of the conjunctions we have in English.
part of speech When you look up a word in the dictionary, you can usually see something called "part of speech." A part of speech is a label that tells you how a word can be used in a sentence. In English, there are nine parts of speech. They are called noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, pronoun, article, and interjection.
semicolon a punctuation mark (;). It is used to separate independent clauses in a sentence when there is no conjunction.
