definition: |
The dodo is a bird that does not exist on the earth anymore. It used to live on certain islands in the Indian Ocean. It had very short wings and couldn't fly. It became famous as the first animal that people realized had become extinct because of things that humans did.
The dodo became extinct some centuries ago because of a number of things. Sailors who came from Europe hunted it for food, and they brought animals to the islands that damaged the bird's nests and competed with it in many ways. Also, a lot of the bird's habitat was lost when people settled on the islands and used the land for their own purposes.
