A spectrum is a band of colors that is formed when light is passed through something called a "prism," or formed in some other way. A prism is a solid piece of glass that is shaped in such a way that it separates regular light that passes through it into separate colors--the colors of the spectrum. The six colors of the spectrum are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
