A reef is something in the ocean made out of rock, sand, or coral. A reef rises from the bottom of the sea and reaches close to the surface of the water. Reefs support the life of many fish and other sea animals. Reefs give sea creatures places to hide and also make it easy for them to find food.
A reef is a wonderful place for fish, but it can be dangerous for boats that come too close. Many boats have been lost after hitting against a reef.
