definition 1: The liver is an important part of the human body. It is a large, reddish-brown organ located in the upper right part of the abdomen. The liver has many jobs. One of the most important is that it cleans the blood, removing things from the blood that could cause damage to our bodies. Cleaning the blood is necessary even for very healthy people.
Some people have a problem with their liver. It cannot clean the blood in their body. This is very serious. In these cases, people need to have a machine do this for them. It has to be done about three times a week, and it takes about four hours each time. This process is called "dialysis."
definition 2: Certain animals such as cows and pigs also have a liver in their bodies. It works in a similar way to how it works in the human body. This organ is sometimes removed from an animal and used for food for people or animals.
