When people use radar, they use a kind of system that sends out invisible waves that travel through the air to track where and how far away other objects are, like when a ship uses radar to find where other ships are in the water. The ship sends waves out from its location. If the waves hit something, they bounce back to the ship that sent them. When the ship picks up the radar signals coming back, they can figure out where the object is and how far away it is.
The military used radar on the ground to find enemy planes in the air before they could be seen.
