part of speech: noun
definition: Labor Day is a holiday in the United States and Canada that honors the labor of working people. Labor Day is the first Monday in September.
Labor Day celebrates improvements in conditions for working people. In the past, conditions for working people were much harder than they are today. Adults and children often worked 12 or more hours every day, six days a week in factories and mines, for very low pay. Places where they worked were often very unsafe. Now there are many more laws about working. For example, workers must be allowed to have a lunch period. Workers must be paid at least a minimum amount that is decided by the law. Many of these kinds of laws were passed in the 1900s, especially from the 1930s to 1950s.
