Cartilage is a kind of material found in the bodies of humans and certain animals. It is a white tissue that connects to bones. Cartilage is strong, but it is softer than bone. The main purpose of cartilage is to protect your bones and joints. There is cartilage between the bones that come together at your joints--like in your knees and wrists and elbows. The cartilage between the bones lets your them move smoothly in the joints and keeps them from scraping against each other.
Cartilage is sometimes the main tissue that a part of your body is made of. Most of the outside of your ear, for example, is made of cartilage. |
